FDA Issues Alert on Cantaloupes from Honduran Grower/Packer Agropecuaria Montelibano Due To Possible Salmonella Contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an import alert regarding entry of cantaloupe from Agropecuaria Montelibano, a Honduran grower and packer, because, based on current information, fruit from this company appears to be associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the United States and Canada.

If Schnucks and Logli customers in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi purchased whole Chiquita cantaloupes, they may return any unused portion to their nearest store for a full refund.  Although Schnucks and Logli stores carry other brands of cantaloupe, only the whole Chiquita-brand cantaloupes are affected by the alert at this time.

There have been no reports of illness from Cantaloupes purchased from Schnucks or Logli stores.  The FDA is taking this preventative measure while the agency continues to investigate this outbreak in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state partners.

Symptoms of foodborne Salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain.  Individuals who recently have eaten cantaloupe and experienced any of these symptoms should contact their health care professional.

Consumers with questions should contact the FDA at 1-888-INFO-FDA or the Schnucks Consumer Affairs line at 314-994-4400 or 1-800-264-4400.
