My Participation
How can I participate?
- Clean out your medicine cabinet and find any expired medicines or medicines you do not use anymore. These can be prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
- Bring these medicines in their original container to any RxMEDS Schnucks Disposal site on the designated Thursdays, 10 am until 1 pm.
- Please do not remove information regarding the type of medicine in the container. We must record the medication information prior to incineration. You may cross off your name at home or at Schnucks.
- While we will ask you a few questions like your zip code, no personal information will be requested.
- Note, the medicine will be NOT be resold or reused. No refunds or exchanges will be permitted. All medicine will be hauled to a local, licensed incinerator and safely destroyed.
Are there any restrictions? Yes:
- We cannot accept thermometers, needles or medical or household waste.
- The collection program is for individuals or households only. Materials will not be accepted from heath centers, doctors’ offices, or other organizations.

Why use this program?
Why is medicine disposal a concern?
The EPA has recognized that unused prescription and over-the-counter medicines pose a hazard if left in the home. This is because:
- Possible poisoning or harmful side effects can occur following inappropriate ingestion, particularly among the elderly, children, and pets.
- Theft of medicines may lead to inappropriate use or identity theft.
Medicines flushed down the toilet contaminate rivers and streams. This causes growth and reproductive problems in fish and other aquatic wildlife. DO NOT FLUSH your old medicines!
Alternative Disposal Methods
What if I can't make it to a RxMEDS Schnucks Drop off Location?
If you can't make it in at the specific time, you can learn how to properly dispose of medicines at home to be safe for the environment.
At least once a year, go through your medicine cabinet and pull out expired medicines or medicines you are no longer using.
