Schnucks Begins Site Work for New Store in
Carbondale, Ill.
CARBONDALE -- Schnuck Markets, Inc. has
begun demolition work to make way for a new 59,000-square-foot
Schnucks Super Center on the southwest corner of West Main and
South Oakland in Carbondale, Ill. The store, which is scheduled
to open in mid-1997, will be the first Schnucks
supermarket in Carbondale. Schnucks anticipates employing about
250 full-time and part-time workers.
Schnucks is razing the vacant 25,000-square-foot former National
store along with other adjacent buildings on the six-acre site.
The store was acquired by Schnucks in June 1995 as part of its
purchase of National Super Markets. Since then, Schnucks has
acquired adjacent land to accommodate a large supercenter store.
Schnucks is investing about $8 million in construction and fixtures.
Local and state officials have been very helpful in the development
process, according to Craig D. Schnuck, chairman
and chief executive officer.
The DESCO Group of St. Louis is the project developer.
DESCO is marketing an
outparcel lot for development as a retail store or for another
commercial use.
The Schnucks Super Center will feature high quality perishable
and service departments and a prescription pharmacy. The store
also will feature a hot food carryout bar and full-service meat,
deli and seafood departments.
In addition, consumers will find a self-service video department,
a floral shop and a photo development service. The Super Center
also will offer a complete selection of health and beauty products,
stationery, housewares and other general merchandise.
"We look forward to offering Carbondale consumers an array
of great products and services which will rival those of any supermarket
in the country," Schnuck said.
Schnuck Markets, Inc., founded in 1939 in St. Louis, is a regional
family-owned supermarket company with 91 stores in Missouri, Illinois,
Indiana and Kansas.
