Schnucks Cooks Up New Family of Bagel Products

Area bagel lovers are gaining a broad array of new bagel options as Schnucks begins offering a reformulated bagel recipe in 17 flavors. The improved bagels become available today along with six flavors of cream cheese spreads, four types of bagel melts and eight different bagel sandwiches.

The new bagel flavors include Apple-Cinnamon, Asiago Cheese, Blueberry, Cherry, Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon-Raisin, Egg, Garden Vegetable, Garlic, Jalapeno, Oat Bran, Onion, Plain, Pumpernickel, Rye, Sprouted Wheat and Wheat.

Schnucks' new cream cheese spreads include Bacon & Cheddar, Honey Almond, Light Garden Vegetable, Light Raspberry, Light Cream Cheese and Plain Cream Cheese flavors.

The new recipe for Schnucks bagels was custom designed for Schnucks shoppers in six months of taste tests. The new bagels are chewy, bigger and more flavorful than Schnucks' former bagels. The new bagels are half an ounce to a full ounce larger than Schnucks' former bagels. All varieties, except the Asiago Cheese bagel, have zero cholesterol. Calories range from 260 for the Pumpernickel bagel to 340 for the Asiago Cheese bagel.

"Our customers told us they were increasingly using bagels as substitutes for breads and rolls," says Bill Mihu, director of bakery merchandising at Schnucks. "Our newly formulated bagels are great plain, with spreads, and as special sandwiches and melts."

Customers' tastes were also a key factor in creating the cream cheese line.

"We learned from our customers that they wanted lighter, whipped spreads to go with their bagels. So we developed six varieties with a range of flavors and lighter textures," reports Ed Meyer, Schnucks director of deli, seafood and carryout merchandising. "All six varieties are blended in our Schnucks Kitchen so customers are assured of quality and freshness."

Schnucks also is offering four types of bagel melts and eight varieties of bagel sandwiches. Veggie, Cheese, Pepperoni and Deluxe (cheese, pepperoni and mushroom) Melts can be heated in-store or at home. Sandwiches include Mesquite Turkey and Colby; Combo; Roast Beef and Provel Cheese; Honey Ham and Swiss; Chicken Salad; Albacore Tuna Salad; Lox and Spread; and Garden Asiago.

The new bagels are located in all Schnucks bakery departments. Spreads, melts and sandwiches are available in all Schnucks delis.
