Schnuck Markets Begins Construction of Super Center at Decatur's Northgate Shopping Center

DECATUR -- Schnuck Markets, Inc. officially broke ground today to begin construction of a new 62,000-square-foot Schnucks Super Center at Northgate Shopping Center. Schnucks Division Manager Mike Juergensmeyer and Decatur Mayor Terry Howley conducted the ground breaking ceremony on the new store site at Water Street and Pershing Road.

The store is scheduled to open in late fall 1998.

Schnucks expects to provide full- and part-time career opportunities for more than 200 Decatur-area residents at the new store. Schnucks typically begins accepting applications six to eight weeks before a store opens.

The new 24-hour Schnucks Super Center will feature meat, seafood and deli departments along with video, floral, bulk foods and general merchandise departments. The combination food and drug store also will include a bakery and a pharmacy plus departments for health and beauty care products, cellular telephones and pagers, and one-hour photo services.

"We are delighted to soon join the Decatur community and we appreciate the enthusiastic welcome we have received even before opening our doors," said Juergensmeyer. "As The Friendliest Stores in Town, we look forward to bringing what we are known for -- value, variety and great service - to a very friendly city."

"We are extremely happy Schnucks selected Decatur as the site for a new store," said Mayor Howley. "It is great for the city. This will spur economic development in the area and will provide jobs.

"Schnucks is an outstanding corporate citizen," he said. "We know Schnucks plays an active role in the communities they serve. We are happy to have a new partner."

The Schnucks Super Center construction is part of the second phase of a $7 million upgrade to Northgate Shopping Center. The first phase included a new exterior facade for Venture plus the construction and opening of a Hollywood Video. The second phase also includes new parking lot lighting, signage and lot resurfacing. The parking lot will be expanded using 10,000 square feet gained by razing part of the old Jewel-Osco store. The store's remaining 36,000 square feet will be remodeled for future tenants.

William I. Fine, founder and managing general partner of the center's owner, Fine Associates of Minneapolis, and the original co-developer of Northgate Shopping Center, said, "It is a tribute to the people of Decatur and the resurgence of the Decatur economy, that we are able to recycle and return Northgate Shopping Center to first-class status."

BRH Builders, Springfield, Ill., is general contractor on the project. Nova Group, Inc., of Hazelwood, Mo., and RSP Ltd., of Minneapolis, Minn., serve as architects. Decatur companies SKS Engineers and Chastain & Associates are the project engineers. The Schnucks super center will be Schnucks' seventh store serving customers in Central Illinois. Schnucks operates three stores in Springfield, and one each in Champaign, Urbana and Bloomington. Schnuck Markets, Inc. is a family-owned supermarket company based in St. Louis and currently operates 87 stores in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The company was founded in St. Louis in 1939.
