Schnucks Opens New Super Center in Decatur on Tuesday, Oct. 27, Bringing Enhanced Product and Service Variety to Decatur Customers

ST. LOUIS -- Schnuck Markets Inc. will offer Decatur area customers enhanced product and service variety when it opens its new 62,000-square-foot Super Center on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 9 a.m. The combination food and drug store is located at 2800 North Water Street in Decatur, Ill.

Schnucks now operates 90 supermarkets, including seven in Central Illinois and 25 throughout Illinois.

"We're very excited about Schnucks coming to Decatur. They will make a great addition to our community," said Mayor Terry M. Howley. "Schnucks is a first-class company. We think Decatur is a first-class city. It is a great match."

Dan Wheatman, formerly manager of Schnucks' Jefferson store in Springfield, Ill., will manage the store. About 175 full- and part-time associates have been hired to serve Schnucks Decatur area customers.

"Schnucks has many Decatur customers who routinely travel to our stores in Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington and Springfield to shop. We hope Decatur customers enjoy the store as much as we enjoy serving them and being part of the community," said Schnuck.

New Schnucks Offers Product Quality, Convenient Services and Values

Decatur customers will find name brand favorites, a full selection of President's Choice products plus Schnucks' line of private label premium products at attractive prices.

A full-service pharmacy and complete drug store will be available. The pharmacy will be open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Schnucks now operates 77 full-service pharmacies in three states.

Convenient take-home meal services will save time for busy Decatur customers. The Schnucks Super Center offers a complete food bar/salad bar, hot food and Oriental carryout. A complete in-store bakery offers in-store cake decorating and Nancy Anne Bakery items, including fresh bagels and the Healthy Living line of low- or no-fat cakes, brownies and muffins.

An extensive line of wines, beers and liquor will be featured in the liquor department.

Other store features include self-service meat and seafood departments, a full-service deli, bulk foods, a health and beauty department and general merchandise department.

Video department customers will be able to select from more than 5,300 movies and almost 400 video games. DVD videos and laser discs also are available. Schnucks was one of the first retailers to offer DVD videos for rent and recently was named one of the nation's top five supermarket video rental operations by Supermarket News, a national retail trade weekly.

The floral department features ready-to-go fresh flower arrangements and trained floral designers for original creations. Customers can order flowers to be shipped anywhere throughout the country.

The Schnucks Super Center will be Schnucks' seventh store serving customers in Central Illinois. Schnucks operates three stores in Springfield, and one each in Champaign, Urbana and Bloomington.

The Schnucks Super Center is part of the second phase of a $7 million upgrade to Northgate Shopping Center which includes remodeling of a portion of the old Jewel-Osco store, expansion of the parking lot, new parking lot lighting, signage and lot resurfacing.

BRH Builders, Springfield, Ill., is general contractor. Nova Group, Inc., of Hazelwood, Mo., and RSP Ltd., of Minneapolis, Minn., serve as architects. Decatur companies SKS Engineers and Chastain & Associates are the project engineers.

Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 90 stores in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The family-owned company was founded in St. Louis in 1939.
