Schnucks Kicks Off "Excellence in Academics" Pilot Program

Supporting Academic Achievement By St. Louis Public School Students

St. Louis - Schnuck Markets, Inc. and the St. Louis Public Schools are partnering to encourage St. Louis Public School students to achieve academic excellence. A new program, "Excellence in Academics," which rewards and recognizes students who maintain good grades and regular attendance, kicked off today at Lexington School with presentations by the program sponsors and a rally.

The "Excellence in Academics" Program is an incentive-based program that rewards students for achieving 3.0 grade point averages or missing no more than two days of school in a semester. It is being launched as a pilot program for 62 St. Louis public schools and will reach close to 25,000 students grades K-12 in the areas surrounding Schnucks' City Plaza, Delmar, Downtown, Kossuth and Lindell stores. Students meeting the criteria will receive a one-time 10 percent grocery shopping discount, in-school recognition and a gift bag with items from sponsors.

"This program is our way of encouraging students in St. Louis to strive for academic excellence and to attend school daily," said Scott C. Schnuck, president and chief operating officer. "It also is a great opportunity for us to partner with one of the most important institutions in the community, the St. Louis Public Schools."

"Schnucks' Excellence in Academics program has all of the positive elements to encourage success by our students. It also is an excellent example of a major corporate citizen helping our children," said Dr. Cleveland Hammonds, Jr., superintendent, St. Louis Public Schools. "We are very excited about the program and are ready to get started."

The program also rewards teachers and schools. Teachers with the greatest number of high achieving students at elementary, middle and high school levels, and schools with the largest number of high achievers will receive recognition.

"The program supports teachers, parents and the business community working together with children to help them achieve academic excellence," said Ed Ferguson, Schnucks' urban administrator of merchandising and community relations. "The `Excellence in Academics' program is a challenge to all of us to do better and be better, day after day."

Additional program sponsors include Seven-Up; Bunny Bread; Kraft Foods; Ralston Purina; Con Agra; Pepsi; Edy's Grand Ice Cream; Coca-Cola; Pillsbury and Bunzl Distribution.

This program is based on a successful program that received the White House Social Compact Award and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) Award for Neighborhood Partnership in 1998.

" `Excellence in Academics' will take hard work and commitment from everyone involved," said Schnuck.

The program is an example of Schnucks' continuing support of education and commitment to revitalize urban markets. Schnucks opened its City Plaza store at Union Boulevard and Natural Bridge Road in 1998, the first new retail center in North St. Louis since World War II. Schnucks' Chairman Craig D. Schnuck serves as co-chairperson of the St. Louis Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) which is conducting a study of the St. Louis urban core.

For more information on the program, contact Ed Ferguson at 994-4436.

Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 92 stores in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The family-owned company was founded in St. Louis in 1939.
