Schnucks Plans Major Remodeling of Three Stores: Expanding Departments, Increasing Product Variety and Adding Convenient Services for Customers
ST. LOUIS – Schnuck Markets Inc. plans to expand and remodel three St. Louis area stores beginning early summer. Upon completion, customers will enjoy expanded departments, increased product variety and new, convenient services. The expansion and remodels will be done at Schnucks’ stores in Affton at 10070 Gravois, in the City of St. Louis at 7450 Hampton Ave., and in Webster Groves at 8650 Big Bend Blvd.
The remodels will introduce features responding to changing consumer lifestyles requiring convenient, ready-made food items and more one-stop shopping for services.
“We want to provide the additional products and services our customers have requested,” said Craig D. Schnuck, chairman and chief executive officer.
“Customer shopping patterns have changed dramatically since the ‘70s and ‘80s. Our customers lead busy lives and we hope they will be excited about the additional time-saving conveniences,” said Schnuck.
Schnucks currently is working with respective city officials on plan approvals needed prior to the start of construction. The expected completion date for each project is nine to 12
months after construction begins.
Each store currently has a sit-down restaurant, which will be closed and remodeled to make room for the expanded departments and additional services being introduced. About 80 associates will be offered positions in other departments at other locations. The restaurants will close at the end of the business day on Sunday, March 19.
“Customers will be offered self-service food and beverage items they can eat in the store, at home or elsewhere,” said Schnuck. “The new style of service has been extremely popular with customers where we’ve introduced this more convenient option.”
The Affton store at 10070 Gravois currently occupies 50,000 square feet and will be expanding into the restaurant area and adjacent retail space. Upon completion the store will be about 58,000 square feet.
Work will first begin on completing the new addition. The pharmacy, frozen food, health and beauty, and general merchandise departments will be relocated to the new addition and expanded. Upon completion of work in the addition, the grocery, meat, seafood, liquor, produce, bakery and floral departments in the existing store will be remodeled and expanded. Service meat and service seafood departments will be added.
This area also will feature a new carryout/convenience food department to meet the needs of customers in a hurry. An in-store dining area seating about 50 will be added.
The Affton store opened in 1981and was last remodeled in 1994.

The Schnucks at 7450 Hampton Ave., located at the intersection of Hampton and Gravois, currently is 40,000 square feet. With the new addition, the expanded store will be close to 40 percent larger, about 55,000 square feet.
The new addition will feature expanded pharmacy, general merchandise, and health and beauty departments.
Upon completion of the expanded portion of the store, the existing store will be remodeled and will feature expanded produce, grocery, frozen food, liquor, meat, seafood, floral and bakery departments. Service meat, poultry and seafood will be added. A new deli/carryout department featuring additional convenience food items will be added. The department will feature an in-store seating area.
A new storefront and new interior décor are planned.
The store opened in 1961 and was most recently remodeled in 1989.
The architect is Kennedy and Associates.
The Webster Groves store will be expanded by an 11,600-square-foot addition on the store’s west side, creating a completed store size of about 56,000 square feet.
The new expansion will feature an open market décor. A greatly expanded fresh produce department will be displayed in a European market atmosphere with attractive wooden tables and market carts. Included in the market area are an expanded produce department, and a new
deli/carryout department with in-store seating for 28. These departments will be arranged in an open area beneath a high exposed, painted structural ceiling that creates an open-market atmosphere.
Once the addition is open, work will begin in the existing store. A new video department will be added. The floral department will be relocated and greatly expanded. The pharmacy, seafood, meat, dairy, frozen food, grocery, liquor and general merchandise departments will be expanded. Service meat and poultry will be added.
The store opened in 1981 and was last remodeled in 1986.
Kuhlmann Design Group will serve as architect.
