WENTZVILLE, MO – Schnuck Markets, Inc. officially broke ground today to begin construction of a new 62,000-square-foot Schnucks Supercenter in Wentzville, Mo. Schnucks Director of Community Affairs Nancy Schnuck Diemer and Wentzville Mayor Vickie Boedeker conducted the groundbreaking ceremony on the new store site at the northeast corner of Pearce Boulevard and Wentzville Parkway.
The new store is scheduled to open in late fall 2000. It will replace the 33,000-square-foot store in Wentzville Market Plaza on the Interstate 70 South Service Road, which is about one-half mile southwest of the new store. The existing Schnucks store opened in 1986.
The 116 associates working at the existing Schnucks will be transferred to the new store. Schnucks expects to provide full- and part-time career opportunities for an additional 60 associates at the new store. Schnucks typically begins accepting applications six to eight weeks before a store opens.
The new 24-hour Schnucks Supercenter combination food and drug store will feature a pharmacy, video department and much larger departments compared to the existing store.
It will feature a market décor on the right side of the store. A greatly expanded fresh produce department will be displayed in a European market atmosphere with attractive wooden tables and market carts. The market area will include a greatly expanded deli, bakery, service meat and seafood departments, an expanded liquor department, a new deli/carryout food bar service and a new floral department. These departments will be arranged in an open area beneath a high exposed, painted structural ceiling that creates an open-market atmosphere.
The left half of the store will feature the pharmacy, video, grocery, frozen food and dairy departments, general merchandise, health and beauty care departments.
An in-store bank is planned.
“We are delighted to be bringing a new, larger store with greatly expanded product selection to the Wentzville community and we appreciate the enthusiastic response to our plans,” said Schnuck Diemer. “We are a family-owned supermarket and look forward to serving our Wentzville family of customers at our new store.”
“We are extremely delighted to see the Schnucks expansion and reinvestment in our community. This has been a desire of Wentzville citizens since I have been in office,” said Mayor Boedeker. “It is a very good sign of the growth in our community that Schnucks is willing to invest in Wentzville.”
The Schnucks Supercenter construction is part of a two-phase retail development. The first phase includes the construction of the store and an additional 15,800 square feet of retail shops and several separate parcels that will be leased or sold to other businesses. The first phase will take up about 17 acres of the site. The remaining 10 acres located west of the development
will be developed at a later date.
R.G. Brinkmann Construction Company of St. Louis is general contractor on the project. Kuhlmann Design Group of St. Louis is architect.
