Schnucks and Colgate-Palmolive Donation of New Starlight "Fun Center" Lifts Spirits of Decatur Area Children in St. Mary's Hospital
DECATUR - Children undergoing treatment at St. Mary's Hospital are smiling and laughing a little more these days thanks to the recent addition of a multi-media Fun Center donated with the help of Schnuck Markets, Inc., Colgate-Palmolive, Nintendo of America and Starlight Children's Foundation.
"It's exciting to be able to help St. Mary's," said Schnucks Store Manager Heidi Thomas. "This is such a great opportunity to give our assistance to a hospital that has been such a tremendous presence and provided so much benefit."
The Fun Center is a brightly colored, mobile entertainment unit containing a VCR, television, videocassettes and a Nintendo-64 game system. The multi-media unit is specially designed to roll up to kids wherever they are in the hospital. Reports from medical professionals indicate the distractive entertainment therapy provided by Fun Center actually decreases children's requests for pain medication.
"The Fun Center helps kids escape the stress of treatment for a little while and just be kids," said Kevin Goodwin, assistant administrator of St. Mary's Hospital. "Laughter really is pretty good medicine."
Placement of the Fun Center is part of the 10th Anniversary celebration of Colgate-Palmolive's corporate sponsorship of Starlight Children's Foundation.
