Schnucks Announces Plans For Major Expansion And Remodel
CAPE GIRARDEAU – Schnuck Markets, Inc. officially broke ground today to begin a major remodeling of its Cape Girardeau Schnucks Supercenter at 19 South Kingshighway. The remodel of the 24-hour Schnucks Supercenter will add more than 12,000 square feet to the existing 55,000-square-foot food and drug store, to create the largest supermarket in Cape Girardeau. The remodeling is scheduled for completion in early summer 2001.
President and Chief Operating Officer Scott C. Schnuck; Mayor Al Spradling III; Chamber of Commerce President John Mehner; Schnucks Director of Facilities Engineering Ross Hutsel; and Schnucks Store Manager Dennis Marchi conducted the ground breaking ceremony on the store expansion site.
Also present at the ceremony were 14 associates who were original employees when the store opened in 1976.
The remodel will add several new departments and expand existing departments.
“We want to update the store with increased product variety and to bring new products and services our customers want,” said Scott C. Schnuck, president and chief operating officer.
“Our customers lead busy lives and we want to offer them the products and convenient services they require.”
The remodeled supercenter will feature a greatly expanded fresh produce department and expanded deli, bakery, service meat and seafood departments, a new deli/carryout food bar service and a new floral department.
The remodeled store also will include expanded full line grocery, frozen food, dairy, liquor and wine, general merchandise, health and beauty departments, new video, bulk food and nutrition departments, and a relocated full-service, drive-through pharmacy.
Schnucks Responds to Busy Customer Lifestyles
The remodeled store will introduce features that respond to changing customer lifestyles requiring convenient, ready-made food items. An expanded variety of gourmet dine-in and carry-out dinner solutions will be available from new and expanded departments. “Customers want variety in prepared food items they can eat right away or take home,” said Schnuck.
The store will feature a new unique interior decor.
The front facade of the shopping center will also be renovated.
“We are really excited about the remodel. With this expansion, we will provide our customers with the most updated facility in Southeast Missouri,” said Dennis Marchi.
Schnucks joined the Cape Girardeau community in 1976. Now, 24 years later, Schnucks
announces a complete remodel to create a “new” Schnucks store for the area. Kiefner Brothers Construction of Cape Girardeau was involved in the store’s original construction, and will serve as general contractor overseeing the entire remodeling project. Nova Group of St. Louis is architect.
Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 94 stores in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The family-owned company was founded in St. Louis in 1939.
