ST. LOUIS - Schnuck Markets Inc. is notifying customers that Dole Fresh Vegetables of Salinas, Calif., has issued an urgent product recall for Dole Cole Slaw product bearing the "Best is used by" date of 2-5-01 with lot number CO1722A. The cole slaw is packaged in a
16-ounce "pillow type" plastic film. Schnucks has pulled all affected product and is asking customers who have purchased the product to destroy it or return packages to the store for a full refund.
The affected product may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Evidence indicating the presence of Salmonella bacteria was found in one package by inspectors from the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets. Salmonella bacteria can cause diarrhea, fever or abdominal cramps. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience symptoms similar to a bad case of the flu.
No illness resulting from the consumption of this product has been reported.
Dole Cole Slaw is available in Schnucks stores in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana and the Logli stores in Rockford, Ill.
Schnucks received 11 cases of the product on January 22. Each case contains 18 packages. Schnucks recovered 12 packages from store shelves meaning about 186 packages possibly were sold to customers.
Schnucks pulled the product from stores as a precaution on Saturday, Feb. 3, when notified of a potential recall. The official recall notice by Dole was received late today.
