ST. LOUIS, MO - A day for honoring American veterans was the setting for the presentation of a check for $320,000 by Craig D. Schnuck, chairman and chief executive officer of Schnuck Markets, Inc. to United Way's September 11th Fund.
The funds, which include a $100,000 corporate gift from Schnucks, were raised from generous contributions from Schnucks customers between Sept. 21 and Oct. 28. During that time, customers added scanned contributions of $2, $5 and $10 to their grocery totals.
"Over these past few weeks, I have been humbled by the level of giving that I've seen from people throughout our community. We can consider this check, in some small way, a triumph of the human spirit," said Schnuck.
Gary Dollar, president and chief executive officer of the Greater St. Louis Area United Way and John Beck, EMMIS Communications' market manager, also took part in the presentation at Schnucks headquarters, located in St. Louis. Representatives of radio stations within the EMMIS Communication group supported the "Scan and Give" activities through special broadcasts and events at Schnucks locations.
According to Dollar, this donation brings the St. Louis United Way's disaster relief total to $1.6 million. "Logli and Schnucks customers can be assured that their contributions will travel immediately to the United Way in New York City where they will go directly to victims and families affected by the September 11th tragedies," said Dollar.
Customers of Schnucks and Logli Supermarkets participated in the drive. Logli is a division of Schnucks with four stores in Rockford, Ill. and another under construction in Janesville, Wis. Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 91 stores in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The family-owned company was founded in St. Louis in 1939.
