Schnuck Markets "Start Fresh" in the Mid-South

ST. LOUIS - It has been nearly two weeks since Schnuck Markets, Inc. opened 12 stores in Shelby County, Tenn. and DeSoto County, Miss., and business is good. According to Craig D. Schnuck, chairman and chief executive officer for the St. Louis-based grocer, the stores have performed well beyond expectations.

Schnuck gives credit for the stores' performances not only to former Seessel's customers, but also to new shoppers coming in to see upgrades in décor, product selection and presentation. "Our customers have given us a truly amazing reception. Our new Mid-South team will continue to work hard to earn their repeat business through maintaining high quality perishables, product variety and competitive prices," said Schnuck.

Company officials say the store re-openings involved hundreds of Schnucks associates, both new and veteran workers, who logged approximately 6,000 days in just 56 hours! Vendor support during that same time period is estimated at 1,000 workdays. The entire team worked around the clock to ensure the stores were cleaned, inventoried, restocked, remodeled, re-signed and ready to open on June 5.

"The total effort has taken a tremendous amount of teamwork," said Schnuck. "We could not have met our aggressive goals without the support of civic, community and business partners who helped us obtain necessary permits and services needed to get the job done."

The company's expansion into the Mid-South has led to employment of many people from the Memphis area and advancement opportunities for several managers from the St. Louis area. That includes Division Manager Karen Tolan and Jerry Beck, director of Marketing and Merchandising. Together, the two will lead the Schnucks Mid-South Division that continues to grow.

Schnuck said, "In an effort to meet demands of consumers, we recently sent human resource teams to the area. Within one week, more than 350 new associates have been hired for positions at all levels and throughout all locations."

Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 103 stores and 90 in-store pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Mississippi. This includes five stores that operate as Logli Supermarkets and a stand-alone Sentry drug store. The family-owned company was founded in St. Louis in 1939 and is currently ranked 83rd on Family Business Magazine's list of 150 largest family companies.
