Swiss-American Recalls Imported Danish Havarti Plain Cheese
ST. LOUIS - Schnuck Markets, Inc. was just notified that Swiss-American, Inc. has issued an immediate voluntary recall on Imported Danish Havarti Plain cheeses potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
This cheese, distributed by Swiss-American, has sell-by dates of November 1, 2002 through February 18, 2003. This recall covers the following items:
Imported Danish Garden Danish Havarti Plain
(Label reads: Denmark's Finest Havarti Loaf available at Schnucks and Logli stores)
Cut Schnucks Imported Danish Havarti Plain Chunks
(Label reads: Schnucks Danish Havarti)
Cut Prima Della Danish Havarti Plain Chunks
(This is not carried in Schnucks or Logli stores)
The potentially contaminated cheese has been removed from the shelves of all Schnucks and Logli stores. However, customers who have purchased Denmark's Finest Havarti Loaf or the Schnucks Imported Danish Havarti cheeses (Prima Della is not carried by Schnuck Markets, Inc.) bearing the sell-by dates shown above, should return it to their store for a full refund. No other products are involved in this recall.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis. However, healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea.
Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes infections in those with weak immune systems - infants, the frail or elderly, and persons with chronic disease, with HIV infection, or taking chemotherapy.
