Schnuck Markets, Inc. Earns High Marks from Mid-South Arc

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets, Inc. was recently honored with the Mid-South Arc's "Employer of the Year" award for the company's distinguished record of employing individuals with developmental disabilities.

According to Carlene Leaper, executive director of the Mid-South Arc, the award was presented at the organization's Annual Benefit and Awards Gala earlier this month. Three other deserving companies received nominations, but Leaper said the Schnucks program in the Mid-South was particularly impressive.

"The judges considered the number of people hired (in 12 stores), the retention rate and the sincerity of the type of work being done," said Leaper. She also noted that when Schnucks acquired Seessel's in June of 2001, there was no displacement of people with disabilities. "In fact, when we talked to Schnucks associates it was clear they felt valued."

Jerry Beck, the Schnucks Mid-South director of marketing said, "We are proud to receive this award, particularly since we are very new to the Memphis market, and we are anxious to show our community and our associates the caring nature of our company."

Beck added, "Schnucks leadership is supportive of our efforts to find jobs for people on all skills levels, including those with developmental and physical disabilities. Any time we can successfully pair an individual with job functions, we know it is going to be a win/win situation for all involved."

Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 102 stores and 93 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Mississippi and Tennessee. The company is listed 83rd in the Forbes Magazine listing of the nation's "Top 500 Private Companies." The family-owned company was founded in St. Louis in 1939.

In December of 2001, Schnucks was honored in a similar way in St. Louis when leaders accepted the American Association of Mental Retardation's (AAMR's) distinguished Corporate Award.

The Mid-South Arc is a United Way agency that annually provides developmental, residential, leisure and family support services to people with developmental disabilities in Memphis, Shelby County and west Tennessee.
