Schnucks and Sara Lee Announce Low Carb Bread on the Rise

ST. LOUIS -- Representatives of Sara Lee Bakery Group and Schnuck Markets, Inc. will team up tomorrow, at the Richmond Center Schnucks, to announce the launch of Sara Lee's new Delightful Breads.

NBC News' Today Show food trends editor and correspondent Phil Lempert, the "Supermarket Guru," will join Sara Lee and Schnucks representatives to discuss the debut of the bread in live interviews with TV news stations from around the country.

According to Kevin McFadden, Schnucks bakery category manager, "Delightful Breads are Sara Lee's response to the new consumer trend for low carbohydrate products." He added, "This new bread with fewer carbohydrates and fewer calories will help to make it easier for dieters to live up to their New Years resolutions."

"Many lower carb breads actually have the same number of calories as regular bread and have been met with lukewarm consumer response because they just aren't tasty enough," said Brian Howard, Sara Lee director of key accounts. "We now have a recipe that, we believe, will appeal to those who want to limit carb intake but still enjoy a tasty bread with their meal."

Schnuck Markets, Inc currently operates 100 stores and 93 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Mississippi and Tennessee. The family-owned company was founded in St. Louis in 1939 and is currently listed 83rd in the Forbes Magazine listing of the nation's "Top 500 Private Companies."
