ST. LOUIS - In support of weight loss resolutions in the new year, the deli departments at Schnucks are now making a Deli Carbohydrate Guide available to carb conscious customers.
The guide is designed to help customers keep count of the carbs contained in many deli and prepared food favorites. It lists nearly 50 items available at Schnucks deli and breaks them down in categories from meats and cheeses to salads and hot foods. Also listed in the easy-to-read charts are dietary fibers and sugars in each serving.Ed Meyer, Schnucks vice president of deli and seafood operations, says the move was spurred by the popularity of such diets as Atkins and South Beach. "Schnucks is not promoting a particular diet; we are simply responding to the many customers who have requested more information on carbohydrates. Nutritional information such as this is not normally listed on the labels of fresh deli offerings," Meyer said.
Meyer says more people are interested in finding out how carbs affect them. He explained, "Your body burns both carbohydrates and fat as fuel for its energy needs. Carbohydrates are the first fuel to be metabolized. Many diets claim that cutting down sufficiently on your intake of carbohydrates means your body will start burning fat as the primary energy source, which can result in weight loss."
Schnucks stores now carry more than 42 different types of products that are low in carbs. Check the Schnucks website at www.schnucks.com for additional information on low-carb offerings.
