Champaign, Ill. - A large-scale remodel has begun at the Champaign Schnucks store located at 109 North Mattis Road in Champaign, Ill. The renovations are expected to be completed by Memorial Day. Several departments in the 72,000-square-foot will be remodeled. Upon completion, customers also will notice new amenities and new décor.
The Champaign store opened in 1990. According to Store Dan Wheatman, customers will immediately notice the new décor package. "We've updated the store with vibrant, yet earthy colors of green, cream and burgundy. But the real news is in the installation of updated refrigerated cases throughout the store. The new, streamlined cases will help us better display a larger variety of fresh foods and beverages," he said.
Wheatman says a sushi case is also a brand new addition, "This is something new for us and many of our customers are looking forward to it. We will start by offering prepackaged sushi, and if customers really enjoy it, we will begin to prepare it in-store," he said.
The general merchandise department will be completely reset and new shelving will be installed. Wheatman says, "I am particularly excited about the new configuration of the health and beauty area. The general merchandise aisles will be turned from their present 45-degree angle so that they are parallel with other grocery aisles. This will make the area much more customer friendly and make product easier to find."
New produce cases will add a more elegant look to the market side of our store, and in order to provide more efficient service to customers, the bakery will go to a self-service operation. All fresh-baked products will be displayed in a "grab and go" section that will enable customers to access their favorite items faster.
The salad bar will be replaced with a new 19-foot hot and cold food bar, and a new 28-foot refrigerated beer cases will be added.
"Our associates will work hard to make sure that customers are not inconvenienced during the construction," Wheatman says. "Once the remodel is complete, customers will find new store guides at the entrance to direct them through the aisles."
Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 101 stores (including five Logli stores) and 96 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Mississippi. The family-owned company ranks 94th in the Forbes magazine listing of the nation's "Largest Private Companies."
