Cottleville Schnucks to Open on April 5

Customers Will Find Grocery Shopping Has a Fresh New Look

COTTLEVILLE, Mo.-- St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets, Inc. has taken a page from popular television reality shows and given their traditional store floor plan an "extreme makeover." When the 63,000-square-foot full-service food and drug store at 6083 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville in St. Charles County opens April 5, customers will be treated to a fresh new grocery-shopping environment.

Schnucks Facilities Engineering department worked with Canadian-based Perennial Inc. to design the interior and exterior store environment around the new floor plan. According to Craig Schnuck, chairman and chief executive officer, the Schnucks Cottleville Marketplace is still distinctly Schnucks but with a more modern look and feel. "We believe most people simply want a home environment that is clean, comfortable and conducive to what's going on in their family's lives. We want our customers to have that same level of comfort in their grocery store," he said.

According to Schnuck, this new, state-of-the-art grocery store is also built to allow for more efficiency. "Our engineering staff has implemented a blueprint that saves steps for customers and associates. He said, "We have, by design, several smaller stores within a larger store. Our customers will be able to move easily through more spacious aisles, saving time and steps in the process. Likewise, our associates will save time in stocking with fewer steps from the back storage rooms to the display cases." Schnuck says additional savings were realized through lighting and equipment changes.

While grocery stores in other parts of the country are often more basic and offer fewer amenities, the Schnucks approach is decidedly different. Scott Schnuck, president and chief operating officer, explains, "In the early days, when my grandparents sold groceries from behind a counter in a 1,000-square-foot store in north St. Louis, they were there to greet customers and make them feel appreciated. Our new store design is our way of welcoming customers and thanking them for their business."

Director of Facilities Engineering Ross Hutsel said, "Our goal is always to make the very best use of the space we have in every location. Each time we build a new store, we test different ideas to determine which designs and materials work best and are most cost efficient. The Schnucks Cottleville Marketplace is a culmination of all we have learned in recent years."

Hutsel added that Schnucks would continue this as the company moves forward with the construction of additional new stores in Eureka (replacement store), Jennings, Breckenridge and Bettendorf, Iowa. "Everything we do is geared towards enhancing our customers' shopping experience," he said.

Craig Schnuck added, "The reality is that although everyone has to eat, there are more choices of where to shop for groceries now than ever before. We want to give them more reasons to shop at Schnucks now and in the future."

Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 101 stores (including five Logli stores) and 96 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Mississippi. The family-owned company ranks 94th in the Forbes magazine listing of the nation's "Largest Private Companies."
