Schnucks Union Avenue Debuts Its New Look to Rave Reviews

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Just in time for the holiday season, a major remodel at the Schnucks store located at 1761 Union Avenue in Midtown is complete.

"As shoppers enter the store, they are responding favorably to the new décor package and the changes that we have made," said Store Manager David Alcorn. "We have updated the store and designed it to be more user friendly; after all, we are the friendliest stores in town."

Customers will immediately notice several improvements to the 64-year-old location. Along with upgrades to the interior décor and ceiling tiles, the shelving has been reconfigured to enhance space and allow for more product variety. Store refrigeration units also have been replaced with equipment that is technologically state-of-the-art, higher capacity and more energy efficient.

Longtime customer and local historian Barbara Viser said, "Everybody I see says it's a miracle! People are thrilled that we are back to a really nice selection of food and the store looks brighter and so much more appealing. It's amazing what you can stock in these new cases. I haven't seen some of the items that are now stocked in produce for 10 years! They've packed so much in the same space in an appealing way - it's like a new store!"

Store Manager David Alcorn says a lighter décor palette makes the store look and feel larger while new multi-deck cases, the latest in refrigerator technology, have significantly increased perishable variety, especially in produce, bakery, deli, seafood and meat. Alcorn added, "Our marketing and merchandising team estimates we have added 200 items throughout the perishable areas. In grocery and dairy we have added about 500 items and that should make for a great variety of choices."

Viser added, "The Union store is more of a market than a mega store, but with all the urban development that's going on, this could be a mini trend, and it's nice our store could serve as a beginning point for some of that."

Schnucks President and Chief Operating Officer Scott Schnuck says that the company is still looking at options that will allow customers a larger store; at only 26,000 square feet, the Union store is the smallest of all Schnucks 102 stores. "Our efforts to expand or replace the store will continue," Schnuck said.

"We believed the improvements that we have made were necessary so that we may continue to offer the best possible service and variety to our customers," Schnuck added.

Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 102 stores (including five Logli stores) and 99 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Mississippi and Iowa.
