ST. LOUIS - Progressive Grocer magazine, in conjunction with the National Grocer's Association (NGA) recently announced that St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets, Inc. has earned the honor of "Outstanding Regional Independent Retailer" for 2006.
According to Stephen Dowdell, editor-in-chief, the company's success against formidable competitors made Schnucks a natural choice for the award, which will be presented at the NGA convention in Las Vegas, N.V. on Feb. 8.
Dowdell said, "We, at Progressive Grocer, firmly believe the independent operator is still the backbone, and in many cases on the cutting edge, of food retailing today." He added, "In the face of the complex challenges in today's market, the leaders of Schnuck Markets are being honored for the company's prowess as a food purveyor, relationship with and approach to serving customers and status as a great place to work as well as shop."
According to Scott Schnuck, Schnucks president and chief executive officer, the award is a tribute to associates in all seven states. "We are extremely fortunate to have in our employ, a large number of dedicated, career grocers who, over the years, have delivered consistently high levels of service to their customers and to our company. They have helped us to build momentum in the industry, kept us on the forefront of change and put us in a position to earn this honor." Schnuck added, "I am pleased to accept the award on their behalf."
In addition to Schnucks, Progressive Grocer editors and members of the NGA will also bestow achievement awards on Yoke's Fresh Market Inc. of Spokane, Wash., "Outstanding Community-based Independent Retailer" and Associated Grocers Inc. of Baton Rouge, La., "Outstanding Wholesaler."
