Top St. Louis Chefs Hold Their 14th Annual BBQ In Wine Country For A Good Cause

Schnucks Executive Chef Scott Drake Will Be Featured

AUGUSTA, Mo. - More than 30 of St. Louis' top chefs will prepare their best dishes for guests to enjoy as they support local chefs, culinary students and local hunger-focused charitable organizations at the St. Louis Chefs Wine Country BBQ fund-raiser, Sept. 17 at Mount Pleasant Winery. In addition to a feast of tapas-style dishes that range from appetizers and salads to entrees and desserts, the event, which is staged on the picturesque winery grounds in the heart of Missouri's wine county, includes live music by Mo & Dawn and Honeyvox. Additionally, award-winning Mount Pleasant Winery wines will be available for purchase to accompany the feast.

"This year's event promises to be another great day of cooking side by side with my friends," said Chris Desens, coordinator of the event, executive chef at Racquet Club Ladue and president of the ACF Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis, Inc. "I look forward to this event and seeing everyone each year."

The event is sponsored by PFG Middendorf for the 14th year. Additional partners include the local ACF Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis, the Certified Angus Beef brand and Mount Pleasant Winery. Funds generated at this year's event help support local chefs with study/travel programs and, through the ACF Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis, Inc. Education Foundation, provide scholarships to aspiring St. Louis area culinary students. In addition, Operation Food Search and Our Strengths' Operation Frontline will benefit.

Among the chefs expected to participate are Aidan Murphy, executive chef of Old Warson Country Club, and Robert Hertel, an associate professor/department chair at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, who were both recently inducted into the ACF American Academy of Chefs Honor Society. Murphy, the 2006 ACF National "U.S.A's Chef of the Year," also is one of only 62 chefs in the United States to earn the prestigious Certified Master Chef designation from the ACF.

Chef Scott Drake of Schnuck Markets said he is looking forward to participating in his first St. Louis Chefs Wine Country BBQ.

"Schnucks is known for quality perishables, but what some may not know is that we have a team of chefs working daily to develop recipes to deliver flavorful, made-from-scratch entrees and side items to Chef's Express stations across our company. I'm excited to bring a sampling of our expertise to the Chefs BBQ," Drake said. "Coming from a family of chefs, both trained and untrained, I am proud to help sponsor an event that will help to ensure the culinary education of chefs within the St. Louis region."

The St. Louis Chefs Wine Country Barbecue will take place Sunday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are available by calling Mount Pleasant Winery at 800-467-WINE (9463).

Beef dishes served at the event will feature the CAB brand. Only 8 percent of all beef can earn the CAB brand name. Enjoyed for its flavor, tenderness and juiciness, the CAB brand is Angus beef at its best and available locally at Schnuck Markets and many fine restaurants.
