Schnucks To Celebrate 30 Years of Service To Cape Girardeau Community

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - On Friday, Nov. 17, at NOON, customers and associates at the Cape Girardeau Schnucks, located at 19 S. Kingshighway, will join local dignitaries in celebration of the store's three decades of service to Southeast Missouri.

Over the years, grocery stores have come and gone, but through their patronage and support, Cape Girardeau grocery customers have allowed Schnucks to remain a constant in the community. In celebration of this achievement, Store Manager Denny Marchi, Schnucks Executive Committee Chairman Craig Schnuck and Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson will take part in a special rededication ribbon cutting.

The Cape Girardeau Schnucks was the first combination food and drug store for family-owned, St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets, Inc. Craig Schnuck was present at the grand opening of the original Schnucks-Walgreens store on Nov. 16, 1976. Only five years later in 1981, Schnucks would purchase Walgreens' interest in the partnership.

Schnuck said, "Thirty years ago, the Cape community helped us to launch a new store and to pilot a new concept. Because of the conveniences they offered and the growing number of customers interested in eating healthy and maintaining healthy lifestyles, we knew combination food and drug stores represented the future of food retailing."

Schnuck added, "We are grateful to our Cape customers for their support over the years. Customer loyalty and the consistently high levels of service and community support provided by Schnucks associates are the keys to Schnucks' longevity and success in this market."

"Every customer is valued here at Schnucks, and our associates work hard everyday to thank them for their patronage. However, on this special day, we want to invite everyone to stop by the store and celebrate with us," Marchi said. "There will be product sampling throughout the store and of course there will be cake!"

Marchi joined the store in 1985 and has immersed himself in the community. His current affiliations include the United Way, Salvation Army, St. Francis Medical Center, Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce and Southeast Missouri State University. He also serves on the board for Montgomery Bank. In 1990, Marchi was presented with the Edward J. Schnuck Award for community service, one the company's highest honors, and in 2001, Marchi received the Food Marketing Institute's national Store Manager of the Year.

Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 101 stores (including five Logli stores) and 98 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Mississippi and Iowa.
