Contractor Soon To Break Ground On Schnucks Replacement Store In Waterloo, Ill.

WATERLOO, Ill. -Holland Contruction Services of Belleville, Ill., has been named general contractor for the Waterloo Commons shopping center development - the multi-million dollar project that includes a replacement Schnucks store.

Bruce Holland, president and chief executive officer of Holland Construction, said, "We expect the permit process will likely be completed this week. If the weather holds, we should be able to move dirt as early as next week." Schnucks officials expect their new store, located between North Market and Route 3, could open by late 2007.

The new 58,000-square-foot combination food and drug store will be nearly double the size of the existing store. The new Schnucks will anchor an 18-acre retail development that includes several out parcels that will accommodate free standing buildings within a quarter mile of the existing store and help to make the center a destination point for shoppers in surrounding communities.

Waterloo Mayor Terry Kipping said, "We are all anxious to break ground and get this new development underway. The total project represents a $20 million investment in the Waterloo community. The center will bring in additional tax revenue for the city and school district and will result in 400 to 500 new jobs."

The current Schnucks at 738 North Market Street first opened as a Kroger in 1982. Schnucks took ownership in the 1995 National acquisition from Loblaw Companies Limited of Toronto, Canada and remodeled it in 1998.
