Behr To Head Up Schnucks Facilities/Maintenance Team

ST. LOUIS - Leaders of St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets, Inc. today announced that John A. Behr, 47, formerly of the Hussmann Corporation of St. Louis, has been hired as director, facilities/maintenance reporting to Chairman and CEO Scott Schnuck.

In an effort to ensure continued energy and environmental efficiencies in operations, Behr will oversee the maintenance of facilities as well as their refrigeration, heating, A/C and other support equipment. He will be responsible for equipment at more than 100 combination food and drug stores, the central kitchen, bakery plant, dairy plant and warehouses. In keeping with Schnucks' efforts to remain on the cutting-edge of new developments and advancements in food sciences, Behr will apply his expertise in every aspect of equipment usage.

Behr graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri - Rolla in 1981 and earned his master's in 1982. Upon graduation, he was hired as a research engineer at Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill. In 1986, he relocated to Columbus, Ind. to work for Cummins Engine Company.

After joining Hussmann in 1987, he held a number of positions covering every aspect of equipment R&D and engineering. As vice president of engineering, Behr was responsible for overseeing the design and development of the next generation of refrigeration equipment and also partnered with food retailers across the globe to deliver the most up-to-date solutions in refrigeration.

Behr, a registered professional engineer, is a member of both Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor societies. He is also a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. On May 12, Behr will be awarded an honorary professional degree from his alma mater.

Behr and his wife, Marcia, have four children and live in Augusta, Mo.

Behr will follow John Muller, 62, who is retiring after nearly 31 years with Schnucks and nine years as director, facilities/maintenance.

When Muller joined the grocery company, he was responsible for approximately 50 stores - averaging 35,000 square feet. Today, there are more than 100 stores averaging 63,000 square feet. Over the years, he has led the company in efforts to become more energy efficient and environmentally strong.

His retirement plans include spending time with his wife, Nancy, enjoying the outdoors and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and the Boy Scouts.

Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. operates 101 stores (including five Logli stores) and 98 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi.
