Schnucks Shoppers Invited to Taste and Learn About Specialty Potatoes
ST. LOUIS – Frieda’s Organic Klamath Pearl Potatoes will be featured at Schnucks Cooks demonstration counters and in a Produce University® session at Schnuck Markets this November.
On Nov. 7, 8 and 9, Schnucks Cooks demonstration counters in 40 stores will feature the Klamath Pearls in a recipe – “Potato Pearls.” Shoppers will have a chance to watch Schnucks Cooks chefs prepare the recipe and then taste the results. The recipe also includes shallots and Frieda’s Elephant Garlic.
Then on Saturday, Nov. 13, the expert Produce Teams at Schnucks will be hosting Frieda’s Produce University®, featuring the Klamath Pearls as well as specialty onion and garlic varieties. Taking place at all Schnucks and Logli locations in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi, the 8-hour Produce University® open-house provides an opportunity for customers to see, touch, taste and ask questions about the featured produce items.
Frieda’s Organic Klamath Pearl Potatoes are a specialty Irish potato variety that boasts a moist white flesh and ultra-thin skin. Grown exclusively in the Klamath Basin region on the border of California and Oregon, Klamath Pearls are USDA organic and cultivated in concert with the natural habitat.
Also included in the Produce University® demonstrations are Frieda’s Pearl and Boiler Onions, Shallots and Black Garlic. New to markets, Black Garlic is a trend-setting new product that’s made by naturally aging whole garlic bulbs in a patented fermentation process, making the cloves turn black and soft and changing the flavor to a mild, sweet-savory “umami” taste.
On Nov. 13, shoppers are welcome to stop by the produce department anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to discover ways to handle, prepare and enjoy these gourmet ingredients. In addition, informational recipe brochures will be available both at the Schnucks Cooks counter and in the produce department.
“Our Organic Klamath Pearls are really a potato for foodies and we are excited to include them in both the Schnucks Cooks and Produce University® programs,” said Karen Caplan, Frieda’s President and CEO. “These sustainably-farmed potatoes have a fabulous flavor and texture, and there’s no need to peel their thin skins.”
Since 1989, Frieda's Produce University® has helped educate consumers with in-depth product information, preparation ideas and samples of the latest specialty fruits and vegetables within grocers’ produce departments. “As more people cook at home, shoppers are seeking exciting new ingredients to spice up meals. Produce University® provides the information shoppers need to boldly go into their produce aisles and taste something new,” said Karen Caplan, president and CEO of Frieda’s, Inc.
