Schnucks Kehrs Mill in Ballwin Opens with More Than 100 New Hires

BALLWIN, Mo.  – More than 100 new teammates (158 total) have been hired and are anxiously gearing up to serve customers at the opening of the new Schnucks Kehrs Mill food and pharmacy store at 2511 Kehrs Mill Road (63017) in Ballwin.  On Thursday, Nov. 1 at 9 a.m., the family-owned grocery company will kick off a grand opening full of entertainment, product discounts, giveaways and great food.

Schnucks President and COO Todd Schnuck describes the 41,000-square-foot store as a smaller version of the company flagship store in Des Peres. Schnucks Kehrs Mill has many of the key culinary features of Des Peres including the popular Smoke and Grill area.  Yet, because it’s about half the size, it’s easy to shop and offers customers an intimate, small-store experience,” he said.  The excitement level is high for all of us as we gear up to serve customers through spectacular experiences unique to this new format.”

Store manager Jason Vonder Haar says, “Our customers will notice several features that we will use to transform the grocery store into an event venue.  We’ve been working closely with our engineers and the result is a unique take on a Schnucks neighborhood market.  From the fine detailing on the façade to the interior decor, we have included elements that will generate the same warmth and welcoming atmosphere we all try to create for guests in our own homes.”

“As they enter, customers will be greeted by displays of floral and produce, and we’ve positioned the customer service center to complement the additional checkout service now offered there.  There are three layers of lighting, including an abundance of natural light, that help to open the space and showcase our fine products,” Vonder Haar said.  “We’ve been able to create for our customers a dynamic, full-service fresh food and pharmacy store that represents the best of both shopping environments – a quaint neighborhood market that’s easy to navigate yet has the new amenities our customers want.”

Highlighted amenities include:

·         Smoke and Grill rotisserie (six hour smoking process), pizzeria and other made-to-order hot foods and in-store seating

·         Cheese island, olive bar and Sandwich Express featuring Boar’s Head

·         Schnucks Cooks cooking and demonstration station

·         Expanded wine and liquor department with wine tasting counter

The store’s environmentally forward design includes a pervious pavement (57% of the total paved area) that soaks up water like a sponge and reduces runoff.  It also traps solids and filters pollutants at the source before draining into the soil.  A rooftop irrigation system captures rain and filters it so that it can be used to irrigate on-site landscaping.

Other green initiatives of the store include:

·         Water conserving plumbing features in the restrooms

·         Heat reclaim tanks capture and use waste heat to help heat water

·         Occupancy and motion sensors control lighting in parts of the store

·         LED light fixtures on the sales floor

In addition to the first level, there’s a 5,000-square-foot mezzanine with a seating area and community room that will be made available for community meetings.

After Nov. 1, the store’s regular hours will be 6 a.m. – midnight.

As part of the Kehrs Mill project, Schnucks worked closely with MoDot and included additional investments such as a second turn lane and a pedestrian controlled crosswalk to help improve safety primarily for neighborhood students crossing to and from Marquette High School.  New landscaping and a 10-foot fence were installed to the specifications of neighboring residents.

Vonder Haar says during grand opening month, participating non-profit organizations will earn a 10 percent bonus on top of the regular Schnucks eScrip Community Card bonus.  “You earn just by showing your Schnucks eScrip card when you buy groceries at Schnucks Kehrs Mill,” he said.  For more information on this program, looks for the eScrip logo at
