Edwardsville, Ill.             “Last year, identity theft cost consumers and businesses $1.2 billion, and it can take six months or more for an individual to correct credit records,” said Michelle L.             Consumers who suspect they have been a victim of identity theft can obtain copies of their credit reports by calling 877-322-8228, or by going online to  All individuals are entitled by law to obtain a free copy of their credit report every 12 months from the consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
