Schnucks Announces Plans for Two New Stores in Southwest Indiana
Three existing stores will also be remodeled
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – As keynote speaker at the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting and dinner, Schnuck Markets, Inc. Chairman and CEO Scott Schnuck took the opportunity to announce his company’s plans to invest more than $11 million in the Evansville community.
“We are getting close to an agreement that would allow us to replace our Evansville East store (4600 Washington Ave.) with a brand new state-of-the-art facility,” Schnuck said. “While we aren’t quite finalized yet, we are moving towards an agreement for this location.”
The new 70,000-square-foot Evansville East store would be located in the Washington Square mall.
Schnuck also announced plans to build new store and develop a shopping center on company-owned property north of Evansville at Highway 41 & Booneville/New Harmony Road as the population continues to grow in that area near the new North High School.
“We do not have a timetable to offer other than to say that plans are well underway. As more and more families move into the area, we want to make sure that Schnucks is there to offer our unique combination of quality products, service and value,” Schnuck added.
Schnuck also said that several current area stores would be remodeled in 2014. The Evansville North, Evansville West and Green River Road stores are all scheduled for upgrades beginning early next year. He estimates that the construction of the new Evansville East store as well as the remodels of the three existing stores will surpass $11 million. (This estimation does not include the Highway 41 & Booneville/New Harmony project.)
“The investment in the area is our way of giving back to a community that has given so much to us over the years,” Schnuck said. “We thank our Evansville customers for making it possible for us to continue to grow and serve even more area families."
Schnucks entered the Evansville market in 1977 by opening the Evansville North and Evansville East stores in a partnership with Walgreens. After buying out the partnership with Walgreens, Schnucks would go on to open the Evansville West store in 1989. In 1992, Schnucks acquired Neville’s IGA in Newburgh and operated that store until 2008 when a replacement store in Newburgh was built. In 2003, Schnucks opened its Green River Road store. With five stores in the area, Schnucks employs more than 700 teammates.
Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. operates 100 stores and 95 in-store pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. Follow Schnucks on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Schnucks.
