Schnucks Introduces Special Anniversary Brew

Special Schlafly beer commemorates grocer’s 75th year of serving customers

ST. LOUIS – Beer lovers are guaranteed to be talking about the latest collaboration between Schnuck Markets, Inc. and Schlafly as the two St. Louis-based companies introduce a special anniversary brew in celebration of Schnucks 75 years of serving customers.

Last fall, four Schnucks beer experts spent the afternoon at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood, Mo. selecting the hops that would be used to finish the Schnucks Anniversary India Pale Ale (IPA).

Schnucks Beer Guy and Certified Cicerone© Chris Kline says that Schlafly started with a base beer they call a “cream IPA” which consists of a grain bill built with pale malt, white wheat and lactose sugar.  “We spent a lot of time creating an ‘approachable IPA,’ a beer that hopheads and newbies alike could enjoy,” says Kline.  “We chose Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin hops.  Through the complexity of those delicious hops you get tropical and stone fruits, grapefruits, floral and grassy notes with a bit of pine.”

Kline says that the wheat and unfermentable lactose sugar give the beer a smooth, round character while the maltiness is like fresh baked bread with a touch of honey butter.  “What would otherwise be too sweet a beer is balanced brilliantly by 45 IBUs making it one of the least bitter but best balanced American IPAs out there.  At six percent alcohol by volume, it is a bit stronger than a session ale but tame enough for you to have more than just one – and you will!”  he said.

The new 75th Anniversary IPA is now available at Schnucks stores while supplies last.  It is a limited, one-time only release so make sure and try it while you can.
