Enjoy the Sweet Taste of Summer Melons

Customers are invited to “summer school” on Saturday, June 20.

ST. LOUIS – The expert produce teams at Schnucks are ready for summer and excited to share their knowledge of the season’s most delicious fruit: gourmet summer melons! On Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Schnucks and Logli customers are invited to stop in for Frieda’s Produce University®, a fun, hands-on way to discover a wide selection of specialty and exotic melon varieties.

Schnucks will teach shoppers to venture beyond the basic Cantaloupe and Honeydew and try some unique gourmet melon varieties that bring sweet summer flavors to new heights.

Taking place at all Schnucks and Logli locations in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi, the 8-hour Produce University® open-house provides an opportunity for customers to see, touch, taste and ask questions about all things melon!

The June 20th session will feature six specialty U.S.A.-grown melon varieties: French Kiss®, Golden Kiss®, Hami Gold, Piel de Sapo, Crenshaw and Orange Flesh Melons. The signature melon and star of the show is the French Kiss®, a gourmet Cantaloupe and Charentais melon hybrid that boasts a brilliant orange flesh that is dense, crisp and ultra-sweet. Shoppers are welcome to drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to discover the superb flavor and quality of Schnucks suite of summer melons, each with its own unique gourmet taste.

“Nothing says summer like sweet, refreshing melon, and our produce managers are eager to share their knowledge about these fine varieties,” said Mike O'Brien, vice president of produce at Schnucks. “Frieda’s Produce University® is an excellent opportunity for our produce teams to offer their expertise, and a great way to introduce fresh new foods to our shoppers.”

French Kiss® Melons are grown exclusively by Yuma, Arizona-based melon grower, Sandstone Marketing, a family-owned company that produces superior-tasting melons for fine retailers.

Schnucks encourages shoppers to taste the difference that these quality melons can offer. At Produce University®, shoppers will also discover new and exciting ways to prepare melons, from appetizers to salads to desserts.

Since 1989, Frieda's Produce University® has helped educate consumers with in-depth product information, preparation ideas and samples of the latest specialty fruits and vegetables within grocers’ produce departments. “As more people cook at home, shoppers are seeking exciting new ingredients to spice up meals. Produce University® provides the information shoppers need to boldly go into their produce aisles and taste something new,” said Karen Caplan, president and CEO of Frieda’s, Inc.
