Schnuck Markets' O'Brien Named "Marketer of the Year"

ST. LOUIS – The produce industry’s leading weekly newspaper, the Packer, has named Schnucks Vice President of Produce and Floral Michael O’Brien its 2009 “Marketer of the Year.”  O’Brien was presented the award at the Produce Marketing Association’s (PMA) Fresh Summit earlier this month.

A veteran of the supermarket industry, O’Brien has spent 37 years with Schnucks after starting as a bagger while in college in 1972.  He worked his way up through the ranks and was promoted to store manager in 1983 and division manager in 1990.  He accepted his current position in 2001.

According to the Packer, O’Brien received this recognition for a number of reasons including the fact that he knows the trends in the food industry but also knows the business isn’t necessarily built on trends.  He also has taken an active role in increasing produce consumption by being a vocal, active member of industry organizations.

O’Brien is the chairman-elect of the board of directors of PMA.  He also served as chairman of the Produce for Better Health Foundation in 2007 and is champion of the organization’s “5 a Day, Fruits & Veggies – More Matters” campaign and its efforts on a proposed national generic promotion of fruits and vegetables.  In addition to this latest honor, O’Brien was named Produce Merchandising magazine’s “Retailer of the Year” in 2004.

Humbled by the award, O’Brien said, “I get involved because I love making a difference.  I want to affect change rather than sit back and let it happen.”

Going forward, O’Brien says that Schnucks produce departments will continue to focus on sourcing only the freshest fruits and vegetables from around the world, including more products from local Midwest farms and a great selection of organic produce.

O’Brien received his B.S. in Business Administration from Lindenwood College and his M.B.A. from St. Louis University.  He resides in Dardenne Prairie, Mo. with his wife, Theresa.  He has two daughters, Casey and Courtney.

The Packer is the fresh fruit and vegetable industry's leading source for news, information and analysis.  The Packer has been reporting every week on the produce industry since 1893.
