Discover Specialty Citrus at Produce University

Customers are invited to "class" at Schnucks on Saturday, February 27.

ST. LOUIS – The expert Produce Teams at Schnucks are ready to teach shoppers about the wide variety of specialty citrus fruits now in season.  On Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Schnucks and Logli locations are hosting Frieda’s Produce University®, a fun, hands-on way for shoppers to brighten up their winter with the delicious varieties of specialty citrus now available.

Taking place at all Schnucks and Logli locations in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi, the 8-hour Produce University® open-house provides an opportunity for customers to see, touch, taste and ask questions about a variety of unique and lesser-known citrus fruits.

The Feb. 27th session will cover several citrus varieties, including Moro Blood Oranges, Melogolds, Shasta Mandarins, Kumquats, Meyer Lemons and Pummelos. Shoppers are welcome to drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to discover ways to handle, prepare and enjoy these gems of the citrus world.  Various fruits will be sampled as part of this ongoing produce education program.  An informational brochure will also be available.

“Produce University® is a great way to broaden our customers’ tastes and highlight our Produce Teams as knowledgeable and dependable resources,” said Mike O'Brien, vice president of produce at Schnucks.  Frieda’s, the specialty produce supplier, conducts educational seminars with produce managers prior to the in-store promotion.

“Shoppers may be surprised to discover the many varieties of citrus that are now readily available,” said Jackie Caplan Wiggins, vice president of Frieda’s Inc. “Whether enjoyed out of hand as a snack, or incorporated into recipes, these specialty citrus fruits are sure to delight and brighten up the winter season.”

Since 1989, Frieda's Produce University® has helped educate consumers with in-depth product information, preparation ideas and samples of the latest specialty fruits and vegetables within grocers’ produce departments. “As more people cook at home, shoppers are seeking exciting new ingredients to spice up meals. Produce University® provides the information shoppers need to boldly go into their produce aisles and taste something new,” said Karen Caplan, president and CEO of Frieda’s, Inc.
