Customers Are Invited To Produce University On June 14

ST. LOUIS – Turn an ordinary meal into an extraordinary one with help and advice from the produce experts at Schnuck Markets, Inc. On Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Schnucks customers are once again invited to drop in for Frieda’s Produce University®, a hands-on opportunity to learn more about exciting and unique fresh fruits, veggies and gourmet items.

During the 8-hour open house, taking place at all Schnucks and Logli locations, produce managers will be on hand to answer questions and give customers the chance to see, touch and taste a variety of fresh foods, including Asian Pears, French Kiss® Melons, Mini Sweet Peppers and Star Spangled Spuds.  Participants will be able to drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to sample these products, learn about nutritional values and discover ways to incorporate the ingredients into meals.

“Thanks to a great response during last year’s Produce University® event, we decided to offer this educational opportunity several times a year. Educating our customers about specialty produce broadens their tastes and cooking expertise, and highlights our Produce Teams as knowledgeable and dependable resources,” said Mike O'Brien, vice president of produce at Schnucks. Upcoming Produce University® sessions at Schnucks will provide the perfect opportunity to focus on seasonally available produce, such as specialty potatoes in the fall and unique citrus in the winter.

Since 1989, Frieda's Produce University® has helped educate consumers with in-depth product information, preparation ideas and samples of the latest specialty fruits and vegetables within the grocer’s produce departments. “We invite shoppers to discover and learn about the wonderful world of specialty fruits and vegetables at their neighborhood Schnucks store. Taste something new today!” said Karen Caplan, president and CEO of Frieda’s, Inc.

Founded in north St. Louis in 1939, the family-owned grocery company has grown to include more than 100 stores in seven states: Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee, and Mississippi.

Established in 1962 by Frieda Caplan, Frieda's, Inc. was the first wholesale produce company in the U.S. to be founded, owned and operated by a woman. Once a small produce stand at the Los Angeles Produce Market, Frieda's has emerged as the nation's premier marketer and distributor of specialty produce and now offers more than 600 specialty items to grocery and specialty stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. America has Frieda's to thank for introductions to Kiwifruit, Shallots, Cherimoyas, Donut® Peaches, Sugar Snap™ Peas and Habanero Peppers. Learn more at www.friedas.com.
