U. S. Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Names Schnuck Markets OBrien to Advisory Committee

ST. LOUIS – United States Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced that Schnucks Vice President of Produce and Floral Mike O’Brien was one of 25 people appointed to a two-year term on the Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee.   O’Brien also serves as vice chairman of the Produce Marketing Association (PMA).

This committee advises the Agriculture Secretary on fruit and vegetable related industry issues.  It was first chartered in 2001 and rechartered by the USA for two years in May 2009.  Each of the new members will serve two-year terms.

O’Brien said, “I am honored to represent Schnuck Markets and the retail produce industry as a member of this committee.  I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute and to make a difference for families across the nation.”

A veteran of the supermarket industry, O’Brien has spent 38 years with Schnucks after starting as a bagger while in college in 1972.  He worked his way up through the ranks and was promoted to store manager in 1983 and division manager in 1990.  He accepted his current position in 2001.

O’Brien is the chairman-elect of the board of directors of PMA.  He also served as chairman of the Produce for Better Health Foundation in 2007 and is champion of the organization’s “5 a Day, Fruits & Veggies – More Matters” campaign and its efforts on a proposed national generic promotion of fruits and vegetables.  In 2009, The Packer, named O’Brien its “Marketer of the Year.”  He was named Produce Merchandising magazine’s “Retailer of the Year” in 2004.

O’Brien received his B.S. in Business Administration from Lindenwood College and his M.B.A. from St. Louis University.  He resides in Dardenne Prairie, Mo. with his wife, Theresa.  He has two daughters, Casey and Courtney.
