Product may be contaminated with E. coli O145

Vaughan Foods Inc. is recalling romaine lettuce potentially contaminated with E. coli O145.  This precautionary recall is specific to romaine lettuce sold on salad or food bars through May 10.

Schnucks and Logli customers are also urged to check for the following in-store made salads sold in plastic containers in the deli and prepared foods departments with a sell-by date up to and including May 12, 2010:

This recall does not involve any bagged salads sold in Schnucks or Logli produce departments.  This recall is secondary to a recall issued by Andrew Smith Company.

E. coli O145 causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).  HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly.

Schnucks and Logli customers may return any unused product to their nearest store for a full refund.  Customers with questions may contact the Schnucks Consumer Affairs Department at 314-994-4400 or 1-800-264-4400.
