Schnucks to Bring New Full-Service Supermarket to Farmington, Mo.
FARMINGTON, Mo. – According to Farmington Mayor Stuart (Mit) Landrum, his city could have a new full-service 55,000-square-foot Schnucks food and drug store by the end of 2014.
Landrum explained, “Although it’s not final, I am pleased to say we’ve taken some important steps to attracting Schnucks, one of the region’s premier experts in food and pharmacy, to the Farmington community.”
According to Schnucks Vice President of Real Estate Dave Fontana, city administrators first approached Schnucks several years ago about bringing a store to the Farmington community, and while the timing wasn’t right then, a new opportunity recently arose causing Schnucks to reevaluate the project.
“We are excited about serving more customers with our combination of quality products, great customer service and value Schnucks is known for in the region,” Fontana said. “Even though our Festus store is 35 miles away, it serves many Farmington-area residents. In response to that type of support, we are hopeful of bringing a Schnucks store to their neighborhood.”
Landrum added optimistically, “If all approvals are granted, the city will see a new source of revenue in a full-service supermarket, an increase in about 100 new jobs and a great new community partner. Schnucks leaders have demonstrated in communities across the Midwest that they are committed to and passionate about what they are able to do for their customers. We are looking forward to all the expertise and services they will bring to Farmington residents and surrounding communities. The coming of Schnucks to Farmington has been one of the long-held hopes of many of our citizens; the wait is almost over.”
Landrum said the St. Louis-based and family-owned grocery company is an integral part of The DESCO Group’s plan to transform the former 77,000-square-foot Value City building at 942 Valley Creek Drive into a grocery store. The remaining 22,000 square feet of space will be offered for lease. The DESCO Group is the realty company that serves as the property manager for the grocery company. DESCO will purchase the property and manage the lease space.
Fontana says there is a sales tax reimbursement agreement in place due to previous plans to redevelop the property. “The DESCO Group has submitted a proposal, and if accepted, we will invest the funds necessary to transform the building into a new state-of-the-art grocery store. It is a costly process, but Schnucks has experience in this area and with the proper resources, we will make it work for the good of the community,” he said.
